Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon joined Jay Mohr Sports on Wednesday and we asked him why so many pitchers require Tommy John surgery this season.
Mohr: “Why are so many players getting Tommy John Surgery (this season)?”
Maddon: “I think some of it may have to be traced back to what they were doing before they became professional pitchers……like, how often they pitched? I’m not a big advocate of all the travel teams, and having guys pitch as often as they do. When you pitch on some of these travel teams some of the kids pitch two or three times a week and that’s not good. You have to trace it back to that point, because once they get to us, we take care of them really well. Their throwing is monitored and the medical training is outstanding. I’d like to see a more in-depth report done on it myself."
Mohr: “Yeah, you never know what these guys are doing in high school…you may have a crazy coach telling them to eat up innings….”
Maddon: “Everybody wants to win but, you’re dealing with a young man’s potential profession and career. It’s all about winning, but, it’s all about the process. If you really see the big picture, you can protect these guys a little bit better.”
