INVESTIGATORS FINDING A "PLASTIC BLOB" WHICH THEY BELIEVE TO BE A SMOKE DETECTOR FROM THE DEADLY APARTMENT FIRE IN INDEPENDENCE LAST FRIDAY MORNING. STATE FIRE MARSHAL DIRECTOR RAY REYNOLDS SAYS THAT OFFICIALS ARE STILL TRYING TO DETERMINE IF THE DETECTOR WAS OPERATIONAL WHEN THE FIRE, WHICH KILLED 7 YEAR-OLD JAILEIGH POSEY, STARTED. OFFICIALS SAY 6 PEOPLE LIVED IN THE APARTMENT, INCLUDING JAILEIGH'S PARENTS, STEVE AND JAN, HER UNCLE, BRETT AND TWO OTHER CHILDREN. BRETT GOT HOME FROM WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT, THEN WENT TO VISIT A FRIEND AND RETURNED TO FIND THE PLACE ON FIRE.
