City Council in Iowa City considers changes for pedestrian mall

THE PED MALL IN IOWA CITY HAS SEEN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS PEOPLE IN THE AREA AND WITH IT HAS COME AN INCREASE IN COMPLAINTS ABOUT INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR. CITY MANAGER TOM MARKUS SAYS THEY'RE PROPOSING SOME NEW ORDINANCE CHANGES THAT WOULD APPLY TO ALL VIOLATORS WITH THE GOAL IS TO CURB THE BEHAVIOR AND NOT THROW ALL THE HOMELESS PEOPLE IN JAIL...

THE CITY COUNCIL WILL DISCUSS THE PROPOSALS AT TUESDAY'S MEETING AND MAY VOTE ON THE FIRST READING.

CHANGES INCLUDE...FURTHER RESTRICTING PANHANDLING....BANNING THE STORAGE OF PERSONAL ITEMS AND THE USE OF SHOPPING CARTS....AND MAKING IT AGAINST THE LAW TO LIE ON BENCHES BETWEEN 5 AM AND 10 PM.
