THE IOWA CITY DUBUQUE STREET ARMORY WAS DESTROYED IN THE 2008 FLOOD AND HAD TO BE TORN DOWN...BUT JOHNSON COUNTY OFFICIALS ARE MAKING SURE IT'S NOT FORGOTTEN. COUNTY AND CITY OFFICIALS ALONG WITH LOCAL VETERANS GATHERED AT THE LOCATION ON SOUTH DUBUQUE STREET MONDAY MORNING TO DEDICATE THE NEW JOHNSON COUNTY ARMORY AND VETERANS MEMORIAL. THE MEMORIAL CONTAINS FRAGMENTS FROM THE OLD ARMORY INCLUDING A PIECE WITH INSCRIPTIONS OF THE ARMORY'S FOUNDERS. THE MEMORIAL ALSO HAS REPLICAS OF OLD MEDALLIONS FOR THE CALVARY AND MEDICAL UNITS. OFFICIALS SAY VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES CAN PURCHASE BRICKS TO COMMEMORATE THEIR TIME SPENT AT THE NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY.
